He holds a doctorate in Economics from the European University Institute of Florence and a degree in Economics and Philosophy and Letters from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). He also has a master’s degree in Applied Economics from the same university.
He has carried out his academic and research activity at various universities, institutes and centres. He has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses and taken part in research projects at the UAB since 2002 and has also been an associate researcher and member of the Institut d’Economia de Barcelona (IEB) since 2004. He has additionally been a researcher at the Public-Private Sector Research Center of IESE Business School (2006-2019) and a consultant at the Open University of Catalonia (2002-2007).
He has given postgraduate guest lectures in Colombia, Mexico and Chile. He has been a visiting researcher at the University of California (Berkeley) and has also carried out research work at the London Business School and as a researcher.
On the political and civic side, he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the PSC and the Board of Trustees of the Rafael Campalans Foundation. Previously, he was a councillor at Barcelona City Council between 1991 and 1995 and a member of the Executive Committee of the Socialist Youth of Catalonia (1983-1991). He was also co-founder of the Universitat Progressista d’Estiu de Catalunya i de Federalistes d’Esquerres.
He has published extensively in academic papers, books and articles and has received the Thunderbird Award for the best paper at the Business Association of Latin American Studies Annual Conference, Universidad de Andes School of Management (April 2008) and the Loyola de Palacio Award for the best paper at the Conference on European Energy Markets, Florence 2012.
